The Totem Fusion Skill System

Totem Fusion introduces a new skill system, divided into three distinct categories:

  • Basic Elemental Skill – A fixed skill unique to each elemental totem
  • Elemental Skill – Choose one of six active skills per totem
  • Primordial Skill – Choose one of five passive skills per totem

Each of these skills can be upgraded to level 5, and each upgrade path is independent of the others.

How Totem Fusion Could Change Hero Wars

  • The introduction of new totem skills is expected to shake up Titan team compositions significantly.
  • With three skills per totem, building double-totem setups will require strategic prioritization of six separate upgrades.
  • While meta builds are likely to emerge, manual play will remain important, giving players room for creativity and personalized strategies.
  • This update may not match the diversity of hero battles, but its impact could rival the introduction of Dark and Light elements.
  • For many players, especially long-time veterans, Totem Fusion could reinvigorate Titan battles, which have felt static for some time.
  • Although the new system may feel overwhelming at first, it promises a long-term challenge that helps keep the gameplay engaging.

Totem Fusion as a New Upgrade System

  • Although each skill caps at level 5, you’ll need materials from dismantled totems and Dominion Gifts to perform upgrades. Thanks to recent improvements in totem acquisition, this could become a strong new form of endgame content. Since the enhancement system appears to involve gacha mechanics, players can likely expect a certain degree of randomness and compromise, much like they did with Patterns.
  • Skills can be reset, with invested resources refunded — so stockpiling materials now is a smart move.
  • Veteran paying players with excess totems and Dominion Gifts will finally have something meaningful to invest in again, after months of passively watching the Tournament of Power.
  • While recent changes like Super Titan x5 and easier totem unlocks have made Titan content more accessible for free-to-play (F2P) players, Totem Fusion might widen the gap once again.
  • The Titan meta may shift, but Super Titans will likely remain central. Don’t worry — the meta will take time to settle. Focus on collecting upgrade materials and hold off on investing in non-Super Titans for now.

Preparation Tips

  • Begin stockpiling Totems and Dominion Gifts now, as these resources will be consumed in the new system.
  • The update may discourage emerald-to-totem conversions. While outright removal would likely upset players, increasing totem value will naturally make emeralds more valuable.
  • Even if the 200K emerald conversion option remains, emerald value is expected to rise. Manage your resources with that in mind.

Are There Other Possible Updates for 2025?

  • Hero battles haven’t received any meaningful progression updates in over two years. Although Conquest Areas and League Arena were introduced, neither added true progression mechanics.
  • Pet updates have also paused, possibly indicating a larger system overhaul is in the works.
  • Many players feel that hero progression has hit a plateau. Lyria’s release briefly renewed interest in hero-building, but even that will eventually run its course.
  • If 2025 comes and goes without any new progression updates for heroes, it would mark three consecutive years without major additions — an unprecedented stretch in Hero Wars history.
  • That’s why it’s quite possible we’ll see even more new additions to hero battles in 2025.

Official Message

“In Development: Totem Fusion!”

Greetings, Guardians! We’re excited to share the details of the upcoming update that will shake up Titan battles in Dominion – Totem Fusion!

Totem Fusion will unlock fresh possibilities, offering new tactical depth to make Titan battles more epic than ever before! After all, winning isn’t just about a Titan’s raw power, but about assembling the right team!

With this update, every Totem will be able to hold THREE skills:

  • Basic Elemental Skill – the default skill your Totem already has.
  • Elemental Skill – an active skill that will allow the Totem to affect Titans during battle, affecting the course of the fight! For instance, you can add a skill to your Fire Totem that allows it to freeze (stun) enemies and deal increased damage.
  • Primordial Skill – a passive skill that will affect only allied Titans and create powerful synergies between them, helping you tailor your Totem to different combat scenarios! Running a Water Titan team? Add a skill to your Totem that will boost your Titans’ attack power whenever they receive healing!

These new skills and elemental combinations are designed to add more tactical variety to the familiar elemental circle, which has felt too rigid for creative team-building. With Totem Fusion, you’ll unlock fresh synergies and dynamic new strategies that breathe new life into Titan battles, making them more engaging!

How will Totem Fusion work?

  • With Totem Fusion, you’ll be able to choose from 6 Elemental skills and 5 Primordial skills, each upgradable to Level 5 for even greater power and effectiveness.
  • You’ll choose the skill you want to add to your Totem and increase your chances of unlocking it by using Catalysts – special resources that improve the odds of getting the desired skill. The more Catalysts you invest, the better your chances of getting a higher-level skill.
  • And don’t worry if things don’t go your way – you’ll get some Catalysts back if luck isn’t on your side!

Catalysts will be obtainable in several ways, including by dismantling Totem Fragments or Dominion Gifts you already have, making it easier to upgrade your Totems.

Totem Fusion will not only refresh the familiar mechanics but also allow you to create truly unique Titan combinations. Even your benched Titans will be able to shine in unique and unexpected ways!

Totem Fusion FAQ (Update added on June 12, 2025)

Hello everyone! After the announcement of Totem Fusion, you asked a lot of questions. Today, in this FAQ, we’ll answer the most frequently asked ones. But that’s not all! We will have more details about Totem Fusion mechanics and new Totem skills coming with another article next week! Stay tuned!

  • Q: Will we still be able to gift Totems from our inventory to others, or will there be changes to that?
  • A: Yes, the Totem gifting feature will remain as it is for now. If you have your Totems maxed out, you will be able to give away Totem fragments to other players whose Totems are not fully evolved.
  • Q: Will the Totem exchange for 200,000 Emeralds remain with the addition of Totem Fusion, or do you plan to change it?
  • A: The Totem exchange for emeralds will be disabled once the feature goes live. We’ll announce the exact timeline in advance so players can decide whether to exchange beforehand. When the mechanic goes live, you will be able to exchange it for a certain number of Catalysts instead.
  • Q: Will players with 30 totems be able to obtain catalysts as a grand prize in the Altar of the Elements?
  • A: Currently, there are plans to expand the guaranteed drop system further by increasing the number of possible guaranteed drops from the mechanic. For players who have obtained 30 or more totem fragments, the mechanic will start dropping Catalysts.
  • Q: Will there be any bad luck protection for upgrading totems with catalysts?
  • A: At the time of the feature’s release, Bad Luck Protection will be implemented as a partial refund of spent resources in case of an unsuccessful craft. It was stated already in the first article on Totem Fusion and we will expand on that a little bit in a next article
  • Q: Will there be any events or game modes that yield catalysts in the future?
  • A: The developers do not plan to make Totem Fragments and Gifts of Dominions the only source of Catalysts. There are plans to introduce other ways to obtain Catalysts without sacrificing progress toward upgrading totems star levels.
  • Q: Will we be able to equip and unequip Elemental and Primordial Skills, or will the choice be final? Will the unequip cost be as high as with Patterns?
  • A: Patterns have no direct synergy with the Battle Flag power level, whereas Totem skills do. That’s why they shouldn’t be compared. You won’t be able to extract skills from totems, but you will be able to overwrite them. The good news is that once you reach skill level 5, it will be relatively easy to overwrite the skill, since the chances of getting a high-level skill,  and specifically the desired one at level 5, will be quite high.
  • Q: Do you think it’s a good idea to introduce such a big change while League Arena is being tested? Wouldn’t it be better to focus on polishing one new feature before adding another?
  • A: The development of the League Arena and Totem Fusion features is handled by two independent teams. The work is being done in parallel and does not affect each other, so they should be treated as two separate processes. Accordingly, each feature also has its own designated testing team.
  • Q: Will the release of this feature include corresponding changes to Combat Training as well?
  • A: It’s possible that this won’t be added to Combat Training right at the launch of the feature, but will be introduced a bit later, after the initial rollout and adjustments.

Official FAQ article about Totem Fusion

Titles are tailored to the content.

Also, for convenience, I’ll copy today’s FAQ article about Totem Fusion into the starboard.

Since the announcement of Totem Fusion, we’ve seen lots of discussions with concerns and feedback regarding the feature, and we want to thank you for sharing all your thoughts and ideas. Among that feedback we’ve seen quite a few questions and identified some important information gaps that beg for clarification. That’s why today the developers have prepared a new FAQ for you!

1. Totems Will Become Easier to Obtain in the Future

  • Q: If Totems will no longer be cashable for 200,000 emeralds… maybe I have time for them being more attainable? Alongside the introduction of these fusion inducing catalysts
  • A: Yes, we do consider making them a bit more available. They will remain one of the rarest and most precious items, but you will have more opportunities throughout the year to acquire them. Yes, even for free.

We are considering different ways of achieving that goal — maybe adding them as a final reward for some important and rare, but not strictly P2W, quest chain, or launching temporary events during which drop chances for Totems from Titan Artifact Spheres will be significantly increased. Nothing is set in stone just yet, but the general idea is this: yes, Spirit Summoning Spheres and fragment Totems will become more available.

2. Catalysts Will Be Included as Event Rewards

  • Q: Will you tell us the other ways to obtain catalysts before the removal of emerald exchange for totem spheres?
  • A: The main idea is to provide some Catalysts as rewards in regular events — new ones or some of the existing events. What we can already reveal is that we plan to share some amount of Catalysts of both types at the launch of the mechanic, so everyone can try out Totem Fusion and create a couple of fun Totem Skills to play with!

3. Totem Fusion Skill Effect Values Explained

  • Q: What are damage / resistance numbers, area sizes, durations and probabilities (if any) for the new skills?
  • A: The impact of Totem Fusion Skills, just like most Pet or Hero Skills, is very hard to properly evaluate before you can actually play with them. So, we are not rushing to share these details right now, but we have a video presentation planned down the line, and we will share some combat details later on, too.

What is important to know is that the impact of the skills will rely on two main factors: the level of that skill (from 1 to 5), and the Evolution and Level of the main Totem they are infused with. All Totem Fusion Skills will scale in effectiveness with your Totem’s Level and Evolution rank. Just like with Heroes’ Skills, some of the Fusion Skills will benefit from this scaling more than others, but all of them will be affected by it.

This means that players with lower-level or lower-rank Totems might prefer different Fusion Skills than those chosen by players with fully upgraded Totems.

4. Catalysts Can Be Used Regardless of Totem Level

  • Q: Can catalysts be applied to totems below level 130?
  • A: Yes, you absolutely can, you can apply them from the Level 1 of your Totem if you want to.

5. Catalysts Are Not Affected by Totem Evolution Stage

  • Q: Can catalysts be applied to totems below absolute star?
  • A: Yes, you can use Totem Fusion even on a 1-star Totem. If you have enough Catalyst from any source, you can try and create a Primordial or Elemental skill for your Totem, even if it is your first unlocked Totem with 1 Star and Level 1.

But, once again, it is important to remember that Fusion Skills will become stronger (“scale”) with your Totem Level and Rank – so if you want to maximise the effect it’s a good idea to level up your Totem and its Evolution Rank as well.

But in the end, it’s only up to you how to approach Totem Fusion: if you don’t have your Totems maxed, you can use new Totem fragments to Evolve the Totems first instead of exchanging it for Catalysts; or you can go all in on Fusing the most powerful Totem of yours to the max; or you might decide to spread Catalysts among a few Totems, so you have more flexibility in Totem fights — the choice is yours.

6. All Types of Gift of the Dominion Will Work as Catalysts

  • Q: Will there be a way to exchange green, blue, purple, and yellow GoDs for red ones / can they all be used for catalyst exchange?
  • A: Yes, you will be able to exchange all types of Gift of Dominions for a Primordial Catalyst that allows you to create Primordial Fusion Skills. Rarity of the Gift determines how much Catalyst you can get for it.

7. Totems Will No Longer Be Exchangeable for Emeralds, but Gifts Will Be

  • Q: Once all the fusions are complete, could we please be allowed to exchange Totem Summoning Spheres for Emeralds again or gift them to others?
  • A: Gift option is not going anywhere. You will be able to gift Totems (Spirit Summoning Spheres) even if you don’t have your Totems fused. More than that, we will expand the gifting functionality, so you will be able to give away Totems even to those players who have their Totems Evolution maxed already. But in order to give away a Totem fragment, you will still need to have all your own Totems fully evolved.

But don’t rush to give all your Totems away, even after fully upgrading needed Fusion Skills for all the relevant Totems! It might be a good idea to keep them nearby in order to quickly get some Catalysts in case you decide to switch the Fusion Skills to adapt to a meta change or just to experiment with a new strategy.

8. Bad Luck Protection System Is Under Consideration

  • Q: I really do not like to gamble my resources on an Infusion Skill craft/upgrade. Can you make a better Bad Luck Protection or something like that?
  • A: We hear you, and even though there will be some ways to cleverly leverage that randomness in your favor, we understand the concern. For now, we plan to make a better/more rewarding cashback if you have had a few bad attempts, but we will consider other Bad Luck Protection options.

This system is not too easy to transparently present, so we hope to give you a better understanding in a Totem Fusion video playthrough next month.

9. Two Major Concerns About Totem Fusion

  • All right, and now to the big one. I wanted to talk a bit about Totem Fusion. We’ve seen the feedback, and yeah, we know this feature hasn’t landed smoothly for everyone. That’s totally fair.

Honestly, that’s been the case with almost every major feature we’ve introduced. Titans (yep, there were times before Titans!), Pets, new game modes — most of them were met with skepticism at first. Over time, they found their place. We believe Totem Fusion has the same potential. Once you actually get to experiment with it, we think a lot of you will find it pretty fun and impactful, the Titan fights and the overall Titan meta should feel much deeper with Totem Fusion introduction. At least, that’s the intent.

But right now, you haven’t had the chance to actually play with it. All you see is the cost, the randomness, and the uncertainty, which makes it a hard sell.

Still, you have your concerns, and they are absolutely legit. Let’s break down the two biggest concerns you’ve brought up.

Totem-to-Emerald Exchange

  • This one’s a dealbreaker for many of you. We get it, that option became a big part of how players managed resources. But we won’t be bringing it back.
  • The exchange was added back when the only way to get Totems was to throw tons of Emeralds into the Altar. That’s not the case anymore, and keeping the exchange breaks the balance of everything around Totems — including our ability to give them out more freely. With the exchange in place, we simply couldn’t ever offer Totem fragments or access to Totems in events, milestone chains, etc., without causing major issues. Totems will still be rare, but not locked away forever.
  • We’re also keeping and expanding the gifting option. It’ll be a bit less restrictive soon, so there’ll still be ways to share Totems, even after you’re done with your own.

Randomness in Fusion

  • We get why this one stings. Random outcomes are a core part of Hero Wars — Soul Atrium, Artifact Chest, Astral Seer, many event boxes, you name it. But it hits differently when expensive resources are on the line.
  • What we’ve already done is we’ve tried to make Fusion more forgiving than, say, Patterns. There’s some influence over the odds, partial refunds when things don’t go your way, and a reliable path to around Level 3, which is already strong. You only really push higher if you want that final edge.
  • Still, the concern is valid. We’ve passed the feedback to the team, and we’re looking at options for stronger bad luck protection — maybe something like a guaranteed result after a certain number of attempts or Catalyst spent. No promises yet, but the conversation is happening. We would also love to show you the current implementation first, to gather the feedback after you’ve seen it in action and have more context.

Why didn’t we just say that in the FAQ?

  • Fair question. We answered about gifting but didn’t directly confirm the removal of the exchange. Not because we thought you wouldn’t notice — we figured the message was clear without spelling it out. But we see now that it felt like we were dodging the topic, and that’s on us.

10. Totem Emerald Exchange Available Until End of July, Including July Season Totems

  • Q. in July there is a new Element Season, can you tell us, before buying the golden ticket, if the end of converting totem in emeralds will happen this month. As a consumers we have the right (at least in EU) to know exactly what we are buying and eventually expiration dates. Thank you for your transparent e fair comunication.
  • A. Hey! That’s a very good and timely question, thanks for bringing it up. The Totem-to-Emerald exchange will be disabled at the very end of July, just a few hours after the Elemental Season ends.

That means the Elemental Season will be your last chance to get a Totem and still exchange it for Emeralds. But to do that, you’ll need to act fast and don’t let the Totem sit in your Equipment tab for days or weeks.

The same goes for all other Totem Fragments you might have. You’ll have the whole month of July to “cash them out.” After that, they’ll only be usable for Catalyst conversion. Just to be clear — the gifting option is not affected by these changes.

We’ll be posting an official notification next week, so that everyone (not just the folks here on Discord) gets the info in time. But to say it one more time: if you don’t let your rewards sit in your mail or inventory, you will be able to exchange the Totem from the upcoming Season for Emeralds.
